Video Shows How Loud the Broadway, Bangor Bridge Construction is

Loud noises at night can be maddening.

I’m a terribly light sleeper. Like, if a housefly farts in another state, I’m quite apt to be awake the rest of the night. and once I’m awake, there’s no turning back. There are definitely days where I’m up for the day at like, 1:00am. So I can’t imagine trying to sleep through a bridge being demolished in my neighborhood.

But Bangor folks who live in the vicinity of the bridge that spans Broadway as it crosses I-95, have been subjected to some pretty serious nighttime noise. We’re not talking like some extra traffic in their neighborhood, we’re talking full-on industrial construction site. Steel girders being ripped out, road decking being stripped off… It’s nuts.

The project will be going on for a while.

Maine is among many states trying to update it’s aging and failing bridges. Several have been replaced around Bangor already. The bridge that spans Union Street, and the one that spans Ohio Street, both those have been redone. Not to mention several up and down the highway itself.

Of course, the work needs to get done. It’s not something that can be ignored, and it can’t all be done at times that are convenient for everyone. A lot of times, work like this is done specifically at night to minimize the effect on normal traffic hours. But then it also causes headaches on the other end. But seriously, check out how loud it can get…

I wouldn’t want to live near there at all. One of my coworkers lives right near it, and has had plenty to say about how disruptive it is. But again, the work has to be done, and it has to be done in a way that is most convenient for everyone. No one wants construction 24/7, but we don’t want a bridge project to take years either. Just keep the earplugs handy…
