The offshore construction for the 920MW Offshore Wind Projects in Taiwan, which is the first involving an investor other than Denmark, has started in Taiwan in order to deliver 920 MW of capacity.
In 2018, Ørsted was awarded the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms. Ørsted entered here a 20 year fixed price corporate power purchase agreement with a corporate customer to offtake the full production of the wind farms 35 to 60 km off the coast of Changhua County, Taiwan.
Since the final investment decision for Ørsted in 2023, manufacturing of the key components started, civil work of the onshore substation, and mobilization of vessels in order to prepare the offshore construction.
They will include 66 Siemens Gamesa 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines, each correspondent to 14 MW.
In the first Asia Pacific region utilization of piling free suction bucket jacket foundation technology will be used.
Offshore installation is expected to be completed on the Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms by the end of 2025 and the energy will be fully connected to the grid in 2026.
When complete, Ørsted will have an operational offshore wind capacity combined across Taiwan of nearly 2 GW sufficient to power two million Taiwanese households with clean energy.
“We recently finished construction of Changhua 1b and 1c and Greater Changhua 1a, and the commencement of offshore construction for the Greater Changhua 2b and 4 is further proof of Ørsted’s unshakable focus on developing, building and operating large scale offshore wind farms in Taiwan.”
“In being the first offshore wind farms in Taiwan and being backed by a CPPA, not only do they show the faith our customer and the market have in Ørsted, the leading technical company of industry’s type, with significant experience and also the indication of a pathfinder in industry and renewable energy and the important role of offshore wind in building a low carbon economy, but they also mark the beginning of a new era for business and the industry to work together for renewable energy and regarding the building of a low carbon economy.”
