Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has secured a major win in an international competition to design an ambitious urban regeneration project in Naples, Italy. The “Napoli Porta Est” (Naples East Gate) masterplan involves a €700 million redevelopment of 30 hectares of disused industrial land in the city’s eastern region.
Transforming an Isolated Urban Landscape
Currently, the area includes abandoned railway yards and is disconnected from the rest of Naples. It faces security concerns and lacks public spaces, with physical and psychological barriers restricting mobility and social interaction. ZHA’s vision aims to address these challenges by fostering connectivity, safety, and accessibility.
Key Developments and Infrastructure
One of the central components of the project is a 60,000-square-meter regional headquarters for the government of Campania province. The headquarters will comprise two towers, accommodating 2,000 civil servants. It will be surrounded by landscaped squares and include additional facilities such as a conference center, cinema, and retail spaces, ensuring a dynamic public realm.
Urban Regeneration Project in Naples also encompasses the redevelopment of Piazza Garibaldi, introducing green parks, underground parking, and the burial of the Circumvesuviana tourist railway. Additionally, a modern bus terminal and upgraded road systems, including a motorway link, will enhance transportation options.
Sustainable and Walkable Design
ZHA’s approach prioritizes sustainability, multimodal transport, and pedestrian-friendly urban planning. A 10-hectare park, designed in collaboration with landscape architect Martha Schwartz, will integrate elements inspired by the volcanic Phlegraean Fields near Mount Vesuvius. The park will feature dedicated zones for recreation, reflection, and community engagement.
Commitment to Green Energy
Sustainability is at the core of the Napoli Porta Est project. The development will incorporate geothermal energy solutions and approximately 7,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels on building rooftops. Additionally, water recycling systems will be implemented to promote resource efficiency. ZHA aims for LEED Platinum certification, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible architecture.
Strengthening Naples’ Urban Future
The Napoli Porta Est masterplan is set to transform Naples’ eastern sector into a thriving, interconnected urban hub. By bridging the gap between the city’s historic center and its industrial outskirts, the project will enhance mobility, public services, and green infrastructure, marking a significant step in the city’s sustainable urban evolution.
